TUESDAY, MARCH 24 - SIGHTSEEING TOUR

Opulent Newport, Rhode Island

Travel to Newport and step back from the Modern Age to the "Gilded Age."  Settled in 1693, Newport soon became a busting seaport rivaling Boston, Charleston, and New York.  And this seaport atmosphere remains.  The harbor where schooners delivered goods now is packed with elegant yachts and lobster boats.  Restored 18th and 19th century commercial shops on the wharves house galleries, boutiques and restaurants.

Newport became a vacation spot in the late 1800s when the country's wealthiest citizens built extravagant summer homes overlooking Rhode Island Sound.  Today's tour will visit three of these opulent homes.

Our first stop is the restored harbor area where there will be time for lunch and shopping.  Then our local guide joins us for the next three hours of visiting homes and touring the Newport area.

The homes we visit are:

The Breakers - Built in 1895 by Cornelius Vanderbilt II (a grandson of the famous Commodore Vanderbilt) this 70-room mansion is the largest and most opulent of Newport's mansions.

Marble House - Built between 1888 and 1892 for William K. Vanderbilt (a grandson of the famous Commodore Vanderbilt and the younger brother of Cornelius II) this 50-room house was the most expensive costing around $11,000,000.

Rosecliff - Built by Theresa Fair Oelrichs at a cost of $2,500,000 and opened in 1902.  Born in Virginia City, Nevada and the daughter of James Graham Fair who made an enormous fortune from the Comstock silver lode, Theresa spent summers in Newport.  She and her husband purchased a home, had it torn down and built Rosecliff.

In addition to visiting these mansions, we will travel the famous ten-mile "Ocean Drive."

11:00am - Tour departs form the Sabin Street side of the Convention Center.

6:00pm    - Tour returns to the Sabin Street side of the Convention Center.

Included in the cost of the tour:

- Round-trip deluxe motorcoach transportation.

- Time for lunch and shopping in Newport.

- Admission to The Breakers, Marble House, and Rosecliff.

- Tour with a local quide when we visit the mansions and drive by additional sites.

Tour cost: $78.00 per person

NOTE: This tour is guaranteed to operate.  It will NOT be cancelled.
